TAMALE : Family Of Missing Woman Want Police To Expedite Investigations

Janifer Selorm, 29, went missing a week ago and has since not been found

It has been a week since a 29 - year - old woman, a resident of Vitting in Tamale  went missing, her family have grown increasingly frustrated and are questioning the seemingly lack of action over the matter by the Northern Regional Police Command.

The Family  believes their daughter, Janifer Ama Selorm, has been kidnapped considering certain people have began sending text messages to her mother (Alice Attey), demanding Janifer’s phone which is believed to contain some sensitive and incriminating information.

The family has provided all leads and evidences that could help find Janifer but say the police are dilly – dallying with investigations over their daughter’s disappearance.

A family spokesperson, Gershon Tsra, at a press conference in Tamale demanded that the police speed up investigations since every day that passes without their daughter compiles to their misery and increases the chances of not finding her alive.

Raymond Atakumah is the brother of Janifer. He believes her sister is kidnapped

The Northern Regional Police Command has denied their lack of action over the case, saying finding the victim and returning her safely to the family remains their topmost priority.

Police PRO, DSP Mohammed Yussif Tanko, in an interview will not put out in the public what their investigations have revealed so far but said the command was in touch with the CID headquarters and intelligence Unit in Accra who are helping to find the missing lady.

“We understand the difficulty the family is going through but we are urging them to continue to support us and continue to come forth with any information that could help us. We are assuring them that we (the police) will do everything possible to get to the bottom of this matter,” the DSP said in an interview with

DSP Tanko who sympathises with the family entreats them to continue to trust in the police, assuring the agency was doing everything possible to unravel the situation.

Janifer Ama Selorm was last seen on Wednesday December 11, after she told family members she was going to take passport size photographs at a popular photo shop in the Tamale Central Business District. She never returned and all efforts by family members to trace her whereabouts have since produced no results.

The 29 – year – old, prior to her disappearance had a bitter altercation with a man who is a civil servant and identified only as Stephen. Janifer reportedly threatened a woman named Faiza, believed to be the spouse of Stephen following the discovery of compromised messages and pictures that showed Faiza was indulging in extra – marital relationship with the now missing woman’s boyfriend.

Stephen did not take the threats lightly and for that matter reported her to the police who was arrested and later arraigned before court on charges of threat to harm. She was found guilty and fined to pay an amount of GhC 600. After the monies were paid, Janifer was discharged and went home with the family only to disappear later.

At the time of her disappearance, Janifer’s phone was not with her and now some people have begun reaching out to her Mother asking that she sends them the phone or risk losing her daughter forever.

Madam Anice Attey is Janifer's Mother, She has been receiving text messages from unknown persons demanding her daughter's phone

“You will not see your child again as long as you refuse to bring us the phone, stop involving people or we will punish her,” one of the messages sent to Janifer’s mother and made available to journalist at the media conference reads.

"We can kill her and nobody will find her body. Just obey our order,” another frightening text message further reads.

The family spokesperson says they believe Mr Stephen and his wife are behind their daughter’s disappearance.
