TAMALE : Health Workers Create Disabilities, GFD Says

Ghana Federation for Disability has said health workers in the country have contributed to greater part of woes of People Living with Disabilities.

The federation says notion of disability among members is non-existent but medical professionals usually capture them in their reports as incapacitated people, hence cementing the notion of vulnerability and irrelevance among PWDs and their families.

The Federation's head of Communications, Mr Adam Abdul Wahab, revealed at a media briefing in Tamale that their members were being discriminated and treated with disdain by some health workers, a situation, he said has worsened the plight of PWDs since they no longer feel comfortable seeking healthcare at various health facilities.

Mr Wahab suggested the creation of disability desk to be manned by people that can understand and relate better with PWDs, saying doing so will go a long way to enhancing their lives as well as safeguard their rights to accessible and quality healthcare.

The Federation's Communication'a Chief revealed further a research conducted by his outfit in the Greater Accra and Nothern Regions showed PWDs were suffering various forms of discrimination at the Country's leading health facilities with some paying the ultimate price as a result.

To back the research findings, Mr Wahab mentioned an incident of deaf pregnant woman who was left to bleed to death at the Manhyia Government Hospital in Kumasi because nurses allegedly claimed they could not communicate with her.
